I have a S3 phone - I want to unlock it I think?

Ok, I purchased an s3 phone about a year ago used.
1) I only use it wifi
2) I have never inserted a sim card

At this point, I realise that maybe I would need to use this phone for an emergency when there is no wifi around - so I thought I would get a SIM card from 7-11 (for example) and insert that. I don't know if the person I bought the phone from had a plan or not and I don't know if it is unlocked or not.

1) Is my logic about using a sim card for emergencies sound?
2) Will I need to unlock it to use the sim card?
3) If the above is possible- Can I continue to use wifi and only use the SIM card for emergencies?

Also I saw this for unlocking - not sure if it works or not : http://gs3.wonderhowto.com/how-to/ne...rrier-0148738/

Running Android 4.4.2
Model Number SGH-1747M
Kernel 3.4.0-178458

Thanks in advance.

S3 Retirement Project

Hello guys,

I am getting a new phone and I would like to try a retirement project for my beloved S3. I am looking for ideas and pointers to implementation instructions because I am noob and it's unlikely I ll be able to do it on my own.

Some Ideas I have (that need good pointers for implementation) to get ppl started are:

1. Put my phone on the plug. leave it at home, load some motion detector library and have it e-mail me if it detects movement while I m away from home. Ideally with a remote activation interface so I don't trip it.

2. Install kali linux on it so I can play (assuming I find time) with my network. I m such a noob, haven't ever used kali be4, so I doubt I ll be able to make good use of this idea.

3. Leave my phone in the plug and have it serve as my personal web server. Make it display a landing web page or some other minor stuff.

Any other ideas with implementations?

cheers,
Iolaum

hi everyone
flashing I747UCUEMJ2_bootloader_modem bricked my phone right yesterday
i tried the sd card method with a 32gb sd card not from samsung, now i ordered one class 10 samsung 16gb that will arrive right tomorrow
i downloaded debrick-SGH-I747U-CUEMJB3 image for the purpose, flashing it on the sd by means of Win32DiskImager
with the sd card in,the only sign of life that gives this one s3 is the QHSUSB_DLOAD driver missing in device management, and the red light in the corner of course
i'll wait the 16gb sd card of tomorrow, during the wait could someone tell me if i'm doing something wrong?
the phone belongs to my girlfriend's uncle,so you know,i was there just to unlock the phone, downgrading from 4.3 to 4.1.2,and then i got this stupid full brick
thanks in advance
Lorenzo

[ROM][6.0.1][i9300][Unofficial][BETA] Kali NetHunter Porting Galaxy S3 CM13 by d3417_

ENGLISH
Hello all, I'm italian and I made the porting of Kali NetHunter on Galaxy S3 for Cyanogenmod 13.
First of all, you must install the latest version of TWRP
Then, download Cyanogenmod 13 (if you haven't already) and flash zip with recovery.
Download my zip of NetHunter ( mega .n z/#!2dImhCYZ!oe4Sq1nRUE8WxXreYD88StbgxjcZj2MWCeVVG6X Nqfc) and copy it into the INTERNAL MEMORY of your S3 for then flash with recovery.
Open the app NetHunter and install the MINIMAL CHROOT. (Make sure you have at least 500MB of space available)
Just completed the installation, select the METAPACKAGES that interest you and install them.
If you go on the Terminal and try to run it with the bootkali user there quit, then you have to open it as root and write su -c bootkali et voila.
Let me start by saying that it is a beta version, then could have problems if you have the time to build a fix in one zip about send me in PM or answer here that adding.
It is recommended that you use the Terminal implemented in Cyanogenmod (activate in Developer Options) rather than Terminal Emulator (always writing su -c bootkali) why else from a lot of problems.

Samsung Galaxy S3 - which one is mine?

$

Hello everybody

I've got an S3 that I bought online (second hand).
What I want to do is to know what one it is (I guess t999 or i747), but there are some weird things:
- The boot screen shows Samsung Galaxy GT I9300
- The OS is Android JB4.1.1
- The model number in the phone specs is GT-I9300
- CPU-z says:
processor ARMv7 rev4
Device model GT-I9300 (d2vl)
Board: MSM8960
Bootloader: T999UVDMD5
RAM: 1594Mb
Build ID: I9300ZSEMC1
- CPU Identifier says:
CPU type: Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 x2
Smarphone type: Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III
RAM memory module: 2Gb DDR (usable 1594Mb)
GPU type: Adreno (TM) 225
- otherwise, the device seems to allow 4G connexion (not tested, no LTE nearby); it is proposed in the menu
- people from XDA told me I9300 cannot be i-747 or t999

In advance thank you

Convert Backup-SMS-file .sme to csv, sqlite or something else?

Hello guys,

my girlfried's Samsung Galaxy S3 broke a few days ago. I got a whole backup from kies on my PC. There's a file called "messages.sme" - can i convert this to csv, sqlite or something else readable? We need an important text-message :/

Or is there an exploit or something else to get root over adb, so I can copy the "/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db" to my PC to read it with a sqlite-viewer?

The phones display break and the home-button got lost. The "back"-Button, too. I've tried a HDMI-/OTG-adapter, but I can only use one of the adapters feature. HDMI or USB... not both.

greeting,
cap.

Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S5 on TMO. Found a list of tethering apps:

Not sure what features should be considered: any recommendations? I am very interested in the process of eliminating tethering app candidates and arrive at a very short-list. Thank you

Restoring IMEI after corrupt EFS

$

Hey guys,

Sorry in advance for what is no doubt something that's came up a few times in the past (as is clearly evident by the posts). I've spent a long time trying to get around the issues with this thing so hopefully I can explain what I've done so far which might help.

So, basically -

My brother had an S3. The screen broke (glass only) and he asked me to repair it. This was a few months ago. Inbetween he moved to using a Windows phone and had the S3 sitting around until he eventually decided to hand me it to repair a couple of days ago.

Now, the phone was working flawlessly prior to him turning it off and switching over to the Windows phone. The S3 sat dormant for a few months, battery out.

When I went to turn it on to test the screen and buttons to ensure that's the only fault, it wouldn't get past the boot screen.
No huge deal there.

Upon checking in recovery it was unable to mount the EFS partition. I managed to get round that.
It still wouldn't boot, so I flashed a new ROM and it booted up fine however was in "Factory mode" with IMEI starting 0049.

I've done a fair amount of searching and came to a few conclusions but essentially :

How I don't know but his EFS folder was competely corrupt and essentially contained few files, none of which were IMEI related. I have no clue how this has happened but it has.

I've managed to get the phone working ALMOST flawlessly by restoring a stock EFS backup IMG using kTool, I HAVE the phone's IMEI and serial which are printed on the phone itself. Only issue now is that the phone can't connect to any networks - because the IMEI is a default.

So, I've dug around in the stock EFS backup IMG that I was able to find (which has got the phone working great, minus mobile networks) and found that the IMEI folder contained a file "mps_code.dat". Upon opening this file it's basically empty. I assume this is because it's a stock EFS I located.

Does anyone have any clue how I can input the IMEI into this file? I tried to decompile the IMG, type it into the file and save, then recompile the IMG however kTool doesn't recognise the newly created IMG file and crashes, then restores the phone. Is there a specific tool I should be using to make the IMG and can someone root into their "mpd_code.dat" and tell me the format that it needs to be in? (I don't need or want any IMEI numbers, just the format that the file is. Just open it in a text editor through Root Explorer (root\efs\imei) and star out the IMEI if you can).

Just to clarify before anyone jumps on it - I'm NOT looking for the file(s) OR the IMEI numbers on anyones phone with that request. Simply the format in which it should be in. I'm simply trying to put the IMEI for the phone ONTO the phone so it'll recognise networks and work as it should. Everything else is absolutely fine now.

So just to clarify the options I've boiled down to :

Recompile the efs.img with the correct IMEI within - if someone can tell me how that'd be great - then restore it on kTool.

OR

Edit the on-phone mps_code.dat with the correct IMEI but I need the format (if someone could peek at theirs that'd be great).

Thank you in advance all and sorry for the story! If I manage to get this to work I'll upload a tutorial with all the relevent files required which I know will help a lot of people.

Cheers
