Hi everyone, I just want to share some findings about two of my galaxy s3 i9300 international version.
I live in Malaysia and have been having the battery draining issue since day one. (During idle with both of my phones).
I've Installed betterbatterystats from xda and found out that the fast dormancy was the culprit.
I've tried various methods such as the:
1. turnoff phone, pull off battery, put back and charge to max then only turn it back on (keep it plugged in until you see the homescreen)
2. disabling fast dormancy through root app method. (AFAIK, Telco in Malaysia supports FD)
3. went into service mode (*#197328640#) and change it to 3G only instead of hsdpa and hsupa.
4. changed wifi settings to never.
5. disabled google now with all the location services and unchecked all three location settings under the settings.
6. disabled all unwanted samsung apps.
7. disabled all sync
Even with all these methods, the drain still there. Android System <20%
So, after some time of reading and dealing with how fast dormancy works in my country (Malaysia) Carrier (Maxis and Umobile specifically), through the utms service mode (*#0011#), I can see that the UMTS RCC stats is switching rapidly between idle to dch or pach.
Moreover, betterbatterystats app shows high usage of multipdp, secril_fd-interface when idle. (Clearly the fast dormancy is not working here).
Done some researches and found out that enabling the data roaming under the settings sorts out all the above issues and the battery usage for android system drops back to <10%, fast dormancy is actually working now (UMTS RCC stats will turn to idle when not in use) and multipdp is no longer showing in kernal wakelocks under betterbatterystats app.
Hope this helps you all.
Added on 3/12/12 - Do remember to do a full shutdown recharge first (refer to method 1 above) before you try to enable the data roaming.
